One of our most exciting recent adventures? Partnering with Idaho Fish & Game and the Idaho Wild Sheep Foundation to collect critical health data from wild bighorn sheep in central Idaho.
How Data is Saving Wild Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn sheep populations in Idaho face a major challenge: pneumonia. This disease has devastated herds, and today, only 32% of lambs survive to adulthood. Understanding the root causes and mitigating the risks is essential to preserving these iconic animals.
Using biological data collected from blood, tissue, and nasal swabs, researchers can closely monitor the health of the herds and track disease prevalence. By analyzing these samples, they aim to identify chronic carriers of pneumonia—individuals that silently spread the disease to others in the herd. Removing these carriers has already shown a significant reduction in pneumonia cases and lamb mortality rates.
This research doesn’t just benefit Idaho’s wild sheep; it serves as a model for other wildlife conservation efforts. With the right data, experts can make informed decisions that directly impact species survival.
